EVERYTHING I SAY IS RIGHT
THE DEEP AND PROFOUND THOUGHTS OF CITIZEN STUART, MANCHESTER BASED LIBERTARIAN, TARGET SHOOTER AND SPACE ENTHUSIAST. EVERYTHING I SAY ON THIS BLOG IS MY OPINION, AND NOT NECESSARILY THAT OF THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY.
Here's a depressingly unsurprising story from the Surrey Advertiser. "As election fever swept the borough last week, some individuals who visited polling stations to vote in Maybury and Sheerwater were told they had already voted by post." “I saw a young Asian woman going in to vote and she was told she had already voted by post. She told them she did not ask for a postal vote and that she hadn’t voted." “She said it was the second year running that this had happened and that she had been questioned about her vote." “The big question is, if this happened last year, why was something not done?” Possibly because doing something about it that would be effective would involve reversing government policy? The government's been encouraging large scale use of postal voting in an attempt to improve the turnout figures at elections. They think the fact that they were voted into power by a small minority of the population undermines their legitimacy. This is a good point, as large numbers of people seem to think that most MPs are illegitimate. But how is anyone supposed to have any confidence in an electoral process that practically encourages fraud? Postal voting is wide open to tampering - it should be a rarely-used exception to the general rule that if you want a say in who governs the country you should take the trouble to get down to the polling station and vote. And anyone who does go out to vote shouldn't have to face the possibility of being told they've already voted - otherwise democracy becomes a sick joke.
MORE VOTE RIGGING?
It looks like there's a strong possibility that there's been some vote rigging going on in Woking, in relation to the recent local elections. Here are some choice quotes from the story:

foursgiant (19.3.09 09:46) ELECTORAL REGISTERS The electoral registers for Sunderland contains incorrect voter registration numbers printed in the columns alongside voters names. Sometimes the Registers are printed with the same error numbers year after year, one particular period from 1958 to 1961 shows that these numbers cannot be common human error as during this period the housing estate was covered by two separate electoral wards and both of these wards show the same and also similar errors for this one particular housing estate. Some people have even received a wrong electoral number more than once in their voting lifetime and nearly all of the electoral registers that I have looked at dating from about 1950 to 1972 contain errors, errors placed in such a way that they can only have been put there for a reason or purpose beyond their normal intended use. I suspect that the error numbers continue into the early 1990’s. These electoral registers can be found in the records section of the public library fawcett street Sunderland Tyne and Wear. except the register for 1973 which for some unknown reason was not printed or it is kept hidden from the public, this must have been planned as early as 1970 or 1971 hence a change in the way the registers are dated, ie. the electoral registers are dated yearly as follows 1969, 1970 etc. then change to being dated 1971-72 and then 1972-73 then 1974 then 1975 missing out an electoral register for one year. Dates in other parts of the registers such as in force dates and the qualifying dates indicates that the missing register is for 1973. Anyway whatever the excuse is for being a register short it must have been known about a long time in advance that one register was not going to be made available to the public. |
